Is a WordPress web design agency the right fit?

A WordPress web design agency should be able to explain why WordPress beats the simpler options for your project. It earns its place when you need a particular plugin, a large archive of posts, custom content such as jobs or properties, or developers who already know your stack.

WordPress is open source under the GPL, so you can host it anywhere and no single company controls your site. The trade-off is that someone has to look after hosting, updates and security for as long as the site runs.

Classic theme or block theme

The Site Editor is only available with a block theme. There, headers, footers, templates and global styles are all edited with blocks, and a change to a shared template part, like the header, applies on every page that uses it.

For WordPress website design we pick the approach that suits your team: a block theme for editors who want visual control, or a classic custom theme where tighter control of the layout matters more.

Plugins without the bloat

Plugins are where WordPress sites gain features, and also where they pick up risk. WordPress's own hardening guide advises removing any plugin you aren't using, because unused code adds attack surface.

As WordPress developers we document every plugin we install and why it's there. If something can be done cleanly in the theme, it doesn't need a plugin, and fewer moving parts means fewer things to update every month.

Design, copy and editing

WordPress is often chosen for publishing, so the editing experience matters as much as the front end. We build block patterns for the sections your team uses most, such as case studies, team grids and calls to action, so new pages look right first time.

We also write the copy for key pages and plan which search terms each one targets. If a lighter platform would serve you better, our Framer vs WordPress guide sets out when each one wins.

Updates, security and hosting

Minor core releases install themselves on most sites, while plugins and themes only update automatically in special cases, such as critical security fixes. So we set up a routine: files and database are backed up, and the backups checked, before each round of updates, as WordPress recommends.

WordPress recommends hosting with PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS. At handover the site sits in your own hosting account, and because we already look after WordPress sites for clients, ongoing care can move straight into our website maintenance plans.

Migration and measurement

Moving onto WordPress, or rebuilding an ageing WordPress site, follows our website redesign process: crawl the old site, keep what ranks, map every URL and redirect it. Core publishes a sitemap index at /wp-sitemap.xml, which helps Google find the new structure.

Success is judged against goals set in discovery, such as enquiries, applications or organic traffic. GA4, Microsoft Clarity and Search Console are set up on your WordPress site from launch day.

Before we start

Gather your admin and hosting logins, a list of the plugins you rely on and what each one does, brand assets and analytics access. If you're not sure WordPress is still right for you, raise it on the first call.

It also helps to know who will update the site day to day and how often, because that decides how much editing flexibility we build into the theme.

How we work

©2026 the think

01 — Discover

We review your current site, plugins and hosting, and learn which features your team relies on every day.

02 — Define

We choose the theme approach, plugins and hosting, map content and redirects, and agree a fixed scope.

03 — Design

We design the main page types, then develop the theme and block patterns on a staging site for your review.

04 — Deliver

We migrate content, test forms and redirects, harden the install, go live on your own hosting and train your editors.

Pricing & FAQ

WordPress website pricing.®

WordPress websites start from £7,500. The fixed quote depends on templates, plugins, integrations and migration, and most builds take 6 to 12 weeks.

How much does a WordPress website cost?

From £7,500 for a custom design and build. Theme approach, plugins, integrations and migration shape the fixed quote you get after discovery.

Do you build custom themes or use page builders?

We usually build a custom or block theme with patterns your team can reuse. If your site already runs on a page builder we can work with it, and we'll explain the speed and upkeep trade-offs first.

Which plugins will our WordPress site need?

Usually forms, SEO, caching, backups and integrations with tools such as Klaviyo, Mailchimp or HubSpot. The official directory lists over 76,000 free plugins, so we choose on support record and fit.

Who hosts and owns the WordPress site?

You do. At handover the site goes into your own hosting account. We'll recommend a host that meets WordPress's recommended requirements, such as PHP 8.3 or newer and HTTPS, and suits your traffic.

Can you migrate our site to or from WordPress?

Yes, in either direction. Moving in, we import content and redirect old URLs; moving out, WordPress exports content as XML, and every URL that earns traffic gets a redirect.

Is WordPress good for SEO?

WordPress core has generated XML sitemaps since version 5.5 and gives you full control of URLs and content. A WordPress web design agency adds the rest: structure, page speed and well-written titles.

How do you keep a WordPress site secure?

Minor and security releases of WordPress core update automatically on most sites, but plugins and themes only do so in special cases. We plan plugin updates, tested backups and two-step login from day one.

Should we use WordPress or Framer?

WordPress suits sites that need specific plugins, membership, complex publishing workflows or a developer team already invested in it. Framer is our main build platform and the better fit for design-led marketing sites that need less upkeep.
